From the Midwest to the East Coast

Last August, we moved from Minnesota to Delaware, from America's Midwest to its East Coast. The move was exciting but exhausting at the same time. Coming from Bangladesh, such a relocation was like møving from Dhaka, the capital, to say, Bangkok, Thailand! 

It was our third move in 5 years. But the first two relocations were inside Minnesota and therefore, less hectic. Our last move would have been super-hectic if my husband’s new employer had not agreed to provide and pay for professional movers, who packed everything for us. When I say everything, I mean everything. The movers packed our clothes, shoes, toiletries, crockery, pots & pans, spices, non-perishable food items, my child's toys and books, and what not. They even transported my husband’s car from Minneapolis, MN to Wilmington, DE. We never had a car transported before. 

Considering the high costs of flying to and staying in Delaware for a few days to find an apartment, we depended solely on apartment-finding websites to choose our new home. Most apartments look prettier in pictures than in reality. Luckily, the apartment that we chose online looks almost as nice as it did in the photos. Being a stay-at-home, it is important for me to live in a place that is not only safe but also pleasant.

The task of unpacking was boring and labor-intensive. Our new place is smaller than our old one. After we saw the size of the new apartment online, we decided to discard some of our furnishings before relocating. We also left behind clothes and dishware because we could not have fit them into the smaller closets and cabinets of our new place. I heard that people on the East Coast live in smaller apartments because the rent is high - it is true. But believe me, I am learning to live with fewer things and it is not bad at all! 

So far, our stay in Delaware has been good. And I hope I continue to feel so for as long as we live here. I know I am loving the weather. Winter here feels like late summer because I spent 5 years of my life in frigid, but otherwise a friendly and lovely state, Minnesota.

বসন্তের জন্য অপেক্ষা

  প্রিয় ঋতু কি কেউ জিজ্ঞেস করলে বিভ্রান্ত হয়ে পড়বো। কোনটা প্রিয় ঋতু? সবগুলোই যে প্রিয়! আমার বর্তমান ঠিকানা যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের দ্বিতীয় ক্ষুদ্রতম অঙ্গরাজ্য ডেলওয়্যার।এই ডেলওয়্যারে প্রতিটা মৌসুম ভিন্নতা নিয়ে আসে। যেহেতু এখানে প্রতিটা ঋতুর একটা   স্বতন্ত্র অস্তিত্ব  আছে তাই তাদের প্রতি আমার পৃথক পৃথক ভালোবাসা জন্মে গেছে। প্রতিটা ঋতুই নিয়ে আসে অনন্য আমেজ, প্রকৃতি সাজে অনুপম সাজে। সেই সাজ  যেন অন্য ঋতুগুলোর চেয়ে একেবারে ভিন্ন। এই যেমন এখন গুটিগুটি পায়ে এসেছে ঋতুরানী বসন্ত: আকাশে-বাতাসে ঝঙ্কৃত হচ্ছে তার আগমনী সুর, আমি সেই সুর শুনতে পাই।  সবগুলো ঋতু প্রিয় হলেও নিজেকে শীতকালের বড় ভক্ত বলে দাবী করতে পারিনা। গ্রীষ্মপ্রধান দেশে যার জন্ম এবং বেড়ে ওঠা, তার পক্ষে ঠান্ডা আবহাওয়াতে মানিয়ে নেওয়া কার্যত কষ্টকর, বিশেষত সেই শীতকাল যদি চার-পাঁচ মাস স্থায়ী হয়। তাই শীতকাল বিদায় নিয়ে যখন বসন্তকাল আবির্ভূত হয় তখন এক একদিন জানলা দিয়ে বাইরে তাকিয়ে ভাবি, "এত্ত সুন্দর একটা দিন দেখার সৌভাগ্য হলো আমার!" শোবার ঘরের জানলা দিয়ে প্রভাতের বাসন্তী রঙের রোদ এসে ভাসিয়ে দেয় কাঠে...

রমজান - স্বদেশে বনাম প্রবাসে

    রান্নাঘরে উঁকি দিলে ভেসে আসে ফুটন্ত তেলে পেঁয়াজু-বেগুনী ভাজার শব্দ। বাতাসে উড়ে বেড়ায় হলুদ-মরিচ-ধনেপাতা-ডাল-বেসন মিশ্রিত এক ধরণের পোড়া-পোড়া মুখরোচক ঘ্রাণ। পেঁয়াজু, বেগুনীর সাথে এক একদিন যোগ হয় আলুনী, কপিনী (ফুলকপি বেসন মেখে ভাজা) কিংবা মুরগীর কিমা দিয়ে তৈরি আলুর চপ। বড় সাদা কাচের বাটিতে পেঁয়াজ, কাঁচা মরিচ, ধনেপাতা, সরিষার তেল সহযোগে মাখা হচ্ছে মুড়ি। বুট ইতিমধ্যে চুলা থেকে নেমেছে। তৈরি হয়ে আছে জগ ভর্তি লেবু কিংবা তেঁতুলের শরবত, তাতে ভাসছে বরফের স্বচ্ছ টুকরো।  এখন বাবার জন্য অপেক্ষা - হয়তো অফিস থেকে ফেরার পথে আনবেন জিলাপি, হালিম কিংবা সুতলি কাবাব। আমার যতদূর মনে পড়ে বাবাকে কখনও সুতলি কাবাব ছাড়া অন্য কোন কাবাব রমজান মাসে আনতে দেখিনি! রোজার মাস ছাড়া সুতলি কাবাব আমাদের খাওয়াও হতো না। পুরান ঢাকার ঐতিহ্যবাহী এই কাবাব কখনো খেয়ে না থাকলে অবশ্যই খেয়ে দেখবেন - পরোটার সাথে খেতে দারুণ সুস্বাদু।  খাওয়া-দাওয়া দিয়ে শুরু করলাম কারণ রমজান মাসে আমাদের খাবারে একটা ভিন্নতা আসে। রোজা রাখার আনন্দটা বৃদ্ধি পায় ইফতারে কি খাব তাই ভেবে! ছোটবেলায় ইফতারের বিশেষ খাবারগুলি ব...

Aboard the world’s longest flight

  Long-haul flights can be daunting, but the idea of flying the world’s longest commercial flight can be especially daunting, even for some seasoned flyers. As an expatriate Bangladeshi living in the US, I am no stranger to long-haul flights. Even so, I was somewhat skeptical about surviving Singapore Airlines ’   SQ 23 , which takes off from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), New York and lands at Changi Airport, Singapore , making it the world’s longest passenger flight; a total of 19 hours from gate to gate. We drove 2.5 hours from Delaware to New York, then took an Uber to JFK after parking our car. After checking in and clearing airport security, we finally had some time to relax. Our business class tickets gave us access to the Air India lounge , where I thought their furniture could use an upgrade.
